The OR/Sterile Processing Liaison at Boston Children’s Hospital plays a key coordinating role between the Operating Room (OR) and Central Sterile Processing to ensure that surgical teams have the instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies they need for safe, timely pediatric care. Working within the Healthcare & Medical Services department, this position focuses on maintaining a seamless flow of instruments and trays, resolving issues in real time, and promoting best practices in instrument handling and decontamination. In this role, the Liaison monitors case carts, instrument sets, and loaner trays to verify accuracy, completeness, and readiness for each procedure. The position collaborates closely with surgeons, OR nurses, technicians, and sterile processing staff to anticipate instrument needs, prioritize urgent requests, and rapidly address missing or damaged items. The Liaison supports efficient case turnover by coordinating the return of used instruments to sterile processing, facilitating proper documentation of usage, and ensuring that high‑priority sets move quickly through decontamination and reprocessing. The OR/Sterile Processing Liaison maintains detailed knowledge of surgical instrumentation, tray configurations, and hospital policies related to infection prevention, instrument tracking, and quality assurance. Using electronic tracking systems and hospital information systems, the Liaison helps track trays, logs instrument issues, and supports data collection for quality improvement projects. The role contributes to continuous process improvement by identifying workflow bottlenecks, recommending changes, and participating in initiatives to reduce delays, errors, and instrument defects. This position aligns with Boston Children’s Hospital’s mission-driven culture focused on patient care, quality, safety, and innovation. The Liaison helps uphold strict standards for sterility and safety to support the best outcomes for children, collaborating across disciplines in a fast-paced, high-acuity surgical environment. Working in state-of-the-art facilities, the Liaison has the opportunity to support complex pediatric surgeries, engage in multidisciplinary teamwork, and contribute to ongoing efforts to standardize processes and implement new technologies and best practices in sterile processing and OR logistics. The role typically requires prior experience in sterile processing, perioperative services, or a similar healthcare support environment, strong communication and problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities during busy surgical schedules. Familiarity with AAMI and AORN guidelines, instrument tracking software, and standard operating procedures for decontamination, inspection, assembly, and sterilization is highly valued. The Liaison must be detail-oriented, reliable, and comfortable working in a highly collaborative, patient-centered setting where accuracy and timeliness directly support safe pediatric surgical care.
