The OR/Sterile Processing Liaison at Boston Children’s Hospital plays a key role in ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care for pediatric patients by serving as the primary connection between the Operating Room (OR) and the Central Sterile Processing Department. Working within the Healthcare & Medical Services department, this position supports a mission-driven culture dedicated to patient safety, quality, and innovation. The OR/Sterile Processing Liaison is responsible for coordinating the timely flow of surgical instruments, trays, and equipment, monitoring case needs, and addressing instrument-related issues before, during, and after surgical procedures. In this role, the liaison closely collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and sterile processing technicians to anticipate instrument requirements, verify tray completeness and sterility, and resolve discrepancies that could impact case readiness. The liaison helps track instrument usage and turnover, prioritizes reprocessing workflow based on the OR schedule, and communicates urgent needs or add-on cases to sterile processing to minimize delays. This position also assists in reviewing preference cards, identifying recurring instrument issues, and participating in quality improvement initiatives to reduce errors, breakage, and missing items. The OR/Sterile Processing Liaison adheres to all infection prevention standards and manufacturer instructions for use, demonstrating thorough knowledge of decontamination, assembly, packaging, sterilization methods, and storage requirements. The liaison helps ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulatory standards, including Joint Commission and AAMI guidelines. The role may involve limited hands-on support handling clean and contaminated instruments within defined safety protocols and using tracking systems to document the instrument lifecycle. The liaison uses electronic instrument tracking and OR scheduling systems to monitor tray status, document problems, and provide real-time updates to the surgical team. Strong communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are essential, as the role often requires rapid assessment and intervention to keep cases on schedule and maintain a safe surgical environment. The OR/Sterile Processing Liaison also participates in staff education by helping to explain new instruments, changes to sets, or process updates to both OR and sterile processing staff, supporting a culture of continuous learning and collaboration. Working in Boston Children’s state-of-the-art facilities, this position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to improved patient outcomes by ensuring that every surgical case has the right instruments, in the right condition, at the right time. Candidates should bring experience in sterile processing, perioperative services, or related healthcare support roles, a strong commitment to pediatric patient safety, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment that values quality, teamwork, and innovation.
