At the State of Minnesota, employees play a critical role in developing policies, providing essential services, and working to improve the well-being and quality of life for all Minnesotans. The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities.

Job Summary

This Lead in Drinking Water Assistant (Student Worker Paraprofessional Senior) position supports the Drinking Water Protection (DWP) Section's efforts to reduce lead exposure in schools and child care facilities by assisting with data management, outreach, and technical support activities. The role focuses on ensuring accurate collection, processing, and reporting of lead testing and remediation data in compliance with state requirements, while also supporting communication and limited field activities under supervision.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Receive, review, and process lead testing and remediation data from schools and child care facilities, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and proper entry into MDH systems and dashboards.
  • Support data quality assurance by following up with facilities, coordinating with internal and external databases, and assisting with updates to reporting systems.
  • Assist in outreach and training efforts to schools and child care providers regarding lead testing requirements, data submission, and remediation practices.
  • Provide basic technical assistance to facilities, including guidance on sample collection procedures and reporting requirements under supervision.
  • Support limited field activities such as water sample collection and contribute to improving data systems, reporting tools, and program documentation as directed.
This is a part-time position, working 15-20 hours per week with flexible work hours and days within 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, dependent on the student's class schedule. Work may be performed in-person with some telework based on the business need and at the unit and supervisor's discretion. The position is anticipated to last until May 2027, or until the selected candidate completes their educational program, whichever occurs sooner.

MDH relies heavily on grant funding, in addition to state appropriated dollars. As an agency, we continually monitor funding levels and navigate some degree of uncertainty related to grant cycles and the impact of the grant funding on program priorities.

This position is currently funded and approved to be filled. While the position is funded at this time, future funding is dependent on the continuation of our funding sources. The Minnesota Department of Health works proactively to sustain programs and maintain our workforce to avoid reductions in force to the very best of our ability. In the event of a loss of funding resulting in a necessary workforce reduction, that process is governed by our collective bargaining agreements and compensation plans.
